What better way to start Summer Camp at the Link than by exploring fun Camp Food?  We will imagine we are out in the wilderness.  A campfire kind of mood to set the week off by preparing fun camp kind of foods like pancakes, trail mix, hobo pies, foil meals, and of course s'mores.  

The children are ready for a break!  Let's do something different and allow them to have some fun in the kitchen.  This is a VERY hands-on class!

The kids will experience important skills; kitchen safety; food handling safety; sanitation of food storage;  the importance of NOT cross-contaminating food; importantly, how to handle and use real knives; and proper culinary knife terms; they will be instructed on how to hold a knife safely and correctly; cutting skills to be used for the rest of their lives by using real knives.  As the week goes on, the culinary skills continue to develop each day as the week progresses.  Throughout the class, other life skills are mentioned like fractions, (the importance and use of math skills in everyday life). The kids will do the preparation, measuring, and cooking.  

On different days, we will be preparing different foods using a variety of cooking tools: induction cooktops, hot plates, blenders, food processors, griddles, toaster ovens, and air fryers.  The best part is they get to enjoy the satisfaction and fruits of their labor by eating the food they prepared.

What makes this class so special is the students create the menu! On Monday, we discuss what they want to learn to make.  This gives the kids an active role in the preparation of the class. Making what they want is a fantastic way to allow the kids to learn something they are interested in.  Now! do we do it exactly the way they think we are - most likely not!  We are going to change it up a bit to make it a healthier version.  Say they want to make cake - OK  We will make it, it sure won't come from a box.

Teaching children how to cook is my passion. I want them to learn to COOK REAL FOOD - EAT REAL FOOD - LOVE REAL FOOD!!!
